Berat

A castle people still live in, above a river valley of stacked Ottoman windows.

Berat is the Ottoman town of central Albania, a UNESCO-listed hillside of white houses whose rows of windows earned it the name City of a Thousand Windows. The Osum river splits the old quarters of Mangalem and Gorica, and above them the castle of Berat is still lived in, its lanes full of Byzantine churches. Mount Tomorr fills the skyline, and the canyons and vineyards of the south are close.

When to avoid Berat

No bad season by the record. Midsummer brings the most visitors and the hottest afternoons for the steep castle climb, so start early. November to March is quieter, cooler and wetter, and some guesthouses close. Osumi Canyon rafting runs on spring high water and ends as the river drops.

Top things to do in Berat

  1. Berat Castle - walk the lived-in Kala

    history scenic 👍 Popular

The hilltop citadel is a walled neighbourhood, not a ruin: cobbled lanes, stone houses, guesthouses and the remains of many churches and mosques. Climb from Mangalem and stay for sunset over the valley from the ramparts.

  2. Onufri Iconographic Museum - icons in the Church of the Dormition

culture arts history ⭐ Highly recommended

Inside the castle, this church holds a carved gilt iconostasis and icons by Onufri, the sixteenth-century master known for a red pigment no one could copy, and by his son Nikolla.

  3. Mangalem - the thousand windows up close

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

Wander the steep stepped alleys of the old Muslim quarter between whitewashed houses, past the Bachelors' Mosque, the Lead Mosque and the King Mosque with the Halveti tekke beside it.

  4. Gorica Bridge - cross to the Christian quarter

    scenic history 👍 Popular

The arched stone footbridge leads to Gorica, the quieter bank, with its church of St Thomas and the classic view back across the river to the facades of Mangalem.

  5. Ethnographic Museum - an Ottoman merchant house

    history culture arts

A restored house in Mangalem shows how a well-off Berat family lived, with its wooden galleries, a loom room, low sofas and a hidden gallery where the men of the house could watch guests.

  6. Berat wine - taste the local grapes

    food ⭐ Highly recommended

The hills around town are one of Albania's main wine areas, with family wineries making reds and whites from native grapes such as shesh and puls. Several welcome visitors for tastings a short drive out.

  7. Boulevard xhiro - join the evening stroll

    culture arts

At dusk the pedestrian boulevard along the Osum fills with families and friends doing the xhiro, the slow evening walk, ending in cafe terraces facing the lit-up old town.

A little history of Berat

A fortified settlement has stood on Berat's hill since the Illyrians, and the ancient city of Antipatrea is usually placed here. The Byzantines knew it as Pulcheriopolis; Bulgarian rule in the ninth century left the Slavic name Belgrad, the white city, which became Berat. Through the middle ages it passed between Byzantium, the Despotate of Epirus and Albanian lords before the Ottomans took it in the early fifteenth century.

Under Ottoman rule Berat grew into a trading town where Muslim Mangalem and Christian Gorica faced each other across the river, while the castle kept its churches. In 1944 a congress here set up Albania's provisional government, and in 1961 the communist state protected the old town as a museum city, which spared it the concrete that changed so much elsewhere. UNESCO listed it in 2008 alongside Gjirokaster.

FAQs about Berat

▸ How many days do I need in Berat?

Two days covers the castle, Mangalem, Gorica and the museums at a slow pace. Add a third for the Osumi Canyon, Bogove or a winery visit.

▸ Can you stay inside Berat Castle?

Yes. The castle is an inhabited quarter with a handful of family guesthouses. It is a steep walk up, and cars are restricted, so pack light.

No. It is one of the better-value stops in Albania, with family guesthouses and simple restaurants at low prices by European standards.
