Gyumri

Armenia's most intact old town, built in black stone, in a city the rest of the country goes to for its humour.

Gyumri is Armenia's second city, a high-plateau town in the north-west that was once the Russian garrison of Alexandropol and later Soviet Leninakan. Its Kumayri old town is one of the few Armenian quarters where the 19th century still stands, in streets of black and red tuff mansions with iron balconies. The 1988 earthquake left deep scars that are still visible, and the city is famous across the country for its craftsmen, artists and sharp sense of humour.

When to avoid Gyumri

Winters are long and hard at this altitude: from November to March expect deep cold, snow and grey skies, and the high roads to Aragats and Lake Arpi can be shut by snow. Summer and early autumn are the time to come.

Top things to do in Gyumri

  1. Kumayri historic district - walk the black-stone old town

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The heart of the city is a protected quarter of 19th-century merchant houses in dark and rust-coloured tuff, with arched gateways, courtyards and iron balconies. It survived both Soviet rebuilding and the earthquake better than anywhere else in Armenia, and is best simply walked.

  2. Vardanants Square - Holy Saviour and the Seven Wounds

    history culture arts 👍 Popular

The main square is framed by two churches: the Holy Saviour, badly damaged in 1988 and rebuilt, and the Church of the Holy Mother of God, known as Yot Verk, the Seven Wounds, after its icon of the Virgin pierced by seven swords.

  3. Black Fortress (Sev Berd) - the round Russian fort

    history ⭐ Highly recommended

A circular 19th-century fortress of black stone on a hill at the edge of the city, built when this was Russia's frontier with the Ottoman Empire. Come for the massive walls and the wide view over Gyumri and the plateau.

  4. Dzitoghtsyan Museum - folk life in a merchant's mansion

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

A museum of social life and national architecture set in a grand old townhouse, with rooms furnished as they were in Alexandropol's trading heyday, crafts and photographs of the city before the earthquake.

  5. Merkurov House-Museum - the sculptor of death masks

    culture arts

Sergey Merkurov was born in Alexandropol and became one of the leading Soviet monumental sculptors, known above all for his death masks of famous figures. His family house now holds a museum of his work.

  6. Aslamazyan Sisters Museum - two painters of Gyumri

    culture arts

Mariam and Yeranuhi Aslamazyan were sisters from this corner of Armenia who became celebrated painters; their museum shows bright, colourful canvases from long careers, a good small stop in the old town.

A little history of Gyumri

Gyumri is an old settlement, known in earlier times as Kumayri, but the city that stands today was shaped by the Russian Empire. In the 1830s Russia built a garrison and fortress here on its frontier with the Ottoman Empire, and the town was renamed Alexandropol. It grew rich on trade and crafts, and its merchants built the black and red tuff houses that still line the old town.

In 1920 the treaty that ended the war between the Armenian republic and Turkey was signed here, shortly before Soviet rule began. Renamed Leninakan, the city became an industrial centre until the 1988 earthquake destroyed much of it. Recovery took decades, and as the Soviet Union ended the city took the name Gyumri.

FAQs about Gyumri

▸ When is the best time to visit Gyumri?

June to October is the best stretch, warm and settled on the high plateau and the time when the roads to Aragats and Lake Arpi are open. November to March is cold and snowy, and the city is at its greyest.

▸ How do I get from Yerevan to Gyumri?

By minibus or taxi it is about two hours on the main road north-west; trains from Yerevan's main station are a little slower but comfortable. Gyumri is an easy overnight trip, though it rewards two nights.

▸ How many days do I need in Gyumri?

Two days covers the old town, the churches, the Black Fortress and the main museums, with a half day for Marmashen. Add a third for Lake Arpi or Aragats.

▸ Can I cross into Turkey from Gyumri?

Gyumri lies close to the Turkish border, but the land border and the old railway crossing towards Kars have long been closed to regular travellers. Check your own government's current advice before planning any overland route.

▸ Can I travel on to Georgia from Gyumri?

Yes. The train between Yerevan and Tbilisi passes through Gyumri, and road routes run north into Georgia, so the city makes a natural stop between the two capitals.
