Florianopolis
More than 40 beaches, a lagoon full of bars and some of Brazil's most consistent surf, all on one island.
The capital of Santa Catarina sits mostly on an island about 50 km long, ringed by more than 40 beaches and known across Brazil as the Ilha da Magia. At its heart, Lagoa da Conceicao is a lagoon backed by dunes and a bohemian village of bars. Around the coast are surf beaches, Azorean fishing villages farming oysters and the beach-club scene of Jurere, which makes the island southern Brazil's summer playground.

When to avoid Florianopolis
No month is one to avoid. Winter brings the most settled weather and the best surf, though the sea is cool and the beach towns quieten. Summer is the beach season, hot and humid, and late December through Carnival brings big crowds and long traffic jams on the island's few roads.

A little history of Florianopolis
The island was home to Carijo Guarani people, and before them to shell-mound builders whose sambaquis and rock carvings survive. Portuguese settlers under Francisco Dias Velho founded Nossa Senhora do Desterro in the 1670s, and in the 1740s the crown fortified the bay and shipped in thousands of Azorean families, whose fishing villages, lace and folklore still shape the island's character.
After the Federalist Revolution of 1893-94, in which the city sided with the rebels, Desterro was renamed after President Floriano Peixoto, whose forces had retaken it. The Hercilio Luz bridge tied the island to the mainland in 1926. Tourism, a federal university and later a tech industry turned the quiet provincial capital into one of Brazil's most sought-after places to live.

FAQs about Florianopolis
▸ When is the best time to visit Florianopolis?
Winter has the most settled, comfortable weather and the best surf, though the sea is cool and some beach businesses close. Summer is the beach season proper: hot, humid and lively, with crowds and traffic peaking from late December through Carnival. Shoulder months mix the two.
▸ Where should I stay in Florianopolis?
Lagoa da Conceicao is the best all-round base, central to the east-coast beaches and the nightlife. Choose Barra da Lagoa or Campeche for surf and quiet, Jurere and the north for calm water and beach clubs, and Centro only for short city stays.
▸ Can you see whales from Florianopolis?
Southern right whales come to the Santa Catarina coast to calve in winter and spring. The best place to see them is south of the island around Garopaba and Praia do Rosa, where they often come close to shore and can be watched from the headlands.
▸ Do you need a car in Florianopolis?
Not strictly, since buses reach most beaches through the integration terminals, but they are slow and the island is large. A car or ride-hailing makes beach-hopping far easier; in high summer, traffic can make short distances take a long time either way.
▸ Why is Florianopolis called the Ilha da Magia?
The nickname, the Island of Magic, comes from the Azorean folk tales of witches and spells recorded on the island, most famously by the artist and folklorist Franklin Cascaes. Today it is used affectionately for the island as a whole.
