Varna
A working port city with the world's oldest gold and a beach at the end of the park.
Varna is Bulgaria's sea capital and third city, a port of wide boulevards and seaside parkland where city life and beach life run together. The Sea Garden, a long park of shaded paths, museums and beach bars, runs along the waterfront, and the archaeological museum holds the Varna gold, grave goods more than six thousand years old that count among the oldest worked gold ever found. Roman baths, an Ottoman-era old quarter and a cave monastery sit within easy reach, and the resorts of St Constantine and Helena and Golden Sands lie just up the coast.

When to avoid Varna
January is the one month to avoid: cold, damp and often windy, with a grey sea. From October to April the beach resorts north of the city largely close and the seafront bars go quiet, so sea swimming really means June to September, even though spring and autumn are fine for sightseeing. July and August bring the crowds.

A little history of Varna
People have lived around Varna's bay and lake for a very long time. The Copper Age cemetery found here in 1972 held the richest early gold hoard known, from a culture that flourished more than six thousand years ago. Greek colonists from Miletus founded Odessos on the site in the sixth century BC, and under Rome it became a major port whose baths still stand in the old quarter.
In 1444 a crusading army was destroyed outside the walls by the Ottomans, and Varna stayed an Ottoman fortress port for more than four centuries. It joined the new Bulgarian state in 1878, grew into the country's main seaport and naval base, and turned to the sea for leisure too, with the resorts north of the city following in the twentieth century.

The months our climate read flags to avoid: the wettest, lowest-rated weather of the year.
FAQs about Varna
▸ When is the best time to visit Varna?
April to November is the best weather for the city, but the sea is only warm enough for most swimmers from June to September, when the resorts and beach bars are all open. May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm, with fewer crowds than July and August. January is the month to avoid.
▸ Should I stay in Varna or Golden Sands?
Stay in Varna for museums, restaurants and a real city that is open all year, with city beaches on the doorstep. Golden Sands suits a pure beach-and-nightlife holiday in summer. St Constantine and Helena is the quieter resort in between, and buses link all three.
▸ Can you swim in Varna itself?
Yes. Sandy city beaches run below the Sea Garden, within walking distance of the centre, with lifeguards and beach clubs in summer. They get busy on hot weekends, and the resort beaches to the north are longer and wider.
▸ How many days do I need in Varna?
Two days covers the gold, the Roman baths, the cathedral and the Sea Garden. Allow three or four to add Aladzha Monastery, Pobiti Kamani, Balchik and Kaliakra, or a day at the beach.
▸ What is the Varna gold?
Grave goods from a Copper Age cemetery on the city's edge, discovered in 1972 and dated to the fifth millennium BC, which makes them among the oldest worked gold objects ever found. The main collection is displayed in the Varna Archaeological Museum.
