Cali

The world capital of salsa, where you come to learn the steps and stay for the nights.

Cali is Colombia's third city, hot and green at the southern end of the Cauca Valley, under the ridges of the Farallones. It calls itself the world capital of salsa and means it: dance academies on every other block, salsotecas spinning old vinyl, and a fast, flicking footwork style the city invented for itself. Above it stands Cristo Rey, the hilltop statue that watches over the valley. The rest is a lived-in city of colonial churches, a river boulevard and some of the strongest Afro-Colombian and Pacific culture in the country.

When to avoid Cali

No bad season - Cali is warm to hot all year at about 1,000 m, cooled most afternoons by a breeze off the western ranges. Apr-May and Nov are the wettest stretches, with heavy afternoon storms. Late December is the Feria de Cali, the city at its most fun and its most booked.

nightlife music culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

Cali salsa is fast and footwork-heavy, and the city is full of academies offering private and group classes to visitors. Even a few lessons make the nights out far more fun, and many travellers stay a week or more just to dance.

  2. Salsotecas and Juanchito - salsa nights out

    nightlife music 👍 Popular

Small salsotecas such as La Topa Tolondra and Tin Tin Deo pack in locals of every age on weeknights, while the big salsa clubs of Juanchito, across the Cauca River, run late at weekends.

  5. Cerro de las Tres Cruces - the dawn climb

    scenic adventure

A steep hill trail to three big crosses above the north-west of the city, climbed by locals early in the morning before the heat. Go early, go with others and come down by mid-morning.

  6. El Gato del Rio - Tejada's cat and his girlfriends

    culture arts

Hernando Tejada's big bronze cat sits on the bank of the Rio Cali, surrounded by painted cat sculptures, his 'girlfriends', each by a different artist. A good start to a walk along the river boulevard.

  7. La Merced and La Ermita - the colonial and Gothic churches

    history culture arts

La Merced, a whitewashed colonial complex on the spot where the city was founded, holds a small archaeological museum. Down by the river, the pale Gothic spires of La Ermita are the city's postcard church.

  8. Museo La Tertulia - modern art by the river

    culture arts

The city's modern and contemporary art museum, set on the slope beside the Rio Cali, with Colombian and Latin American work and an open-air cinema.

  9. Zoologico de Cali - riverside zoo

    nature wildlife culture arts

One of the best zoos in Colombia, laid out along the Rio Cali, with a strong focus on Colombian species, from spectacled bears to condors and a large butterfly house.

  10. Galeria Alameda - eat Cali

    food ⭐ Highly recommended

A covered market of tropical fruit and Pacific fish, with counters cooking seafood from the coast. On the street, try cholado (shaved ice, fruit and condensed milk), lulada, pandebono, aborrajados and chontaduro with salt.

A little history of Cali

Sebastian de Belalcazar founded Santiago de Cali in 1536, two years before Bogota, on the edge of a broad river valley. For three centuries it was a small colonial town serving the cattle and sugar haciendas of the valley, worked by enslaved Africans brought to the cane fields and to the gold mines of the Pacific coast. Their descendants made the valley and the coast the heart of Afro-Colombian culture.

The 20th century turned the town into a city. It became capital of the new Valle del Cauca department in 1910, and the railway to the port of Buenaventura, together with the newly opened Panama Canal, made it a commercial hub for sugar and trade. Through that port came records from Cuba, Puerto Rico and New York, and Cali took salsa as its own, dancing it faster than anyone. The Feria and the 1971 Pan American Games put the city on the map, and it is now Colombia's third largest.

FAQs about Cali

▸ When is the best time to visit Cali?

Any month works, since Cali is warm to hot all year. The drier stretches around Dec-Mar and Jun-Oct are the most comfortable, while Apr-May and Nov bring the heaviest afternoon storms. For the city at full volume, come for the Feria de Cali in late December, but book well ahead.

▸ Do I need to dance to enjoy Cali?

No, but salsa is the reason most visitors come, and the city makes it easy to start. A handful of beginner classes at an academy is enough to get onto the floor at a salsoteca, and even if you only watch, seeing local dancers is the best show in town.

▸ Is Cali safe for travellers?

Most visits pass without trouble, but Cali calls for more big-city care than Colombia's other main destinations. Stay in the well-used barrios, use app rides or called taxis at night, keep phones out of sight on the street and avoid walking empty areas after dark. Demonstrations can occasionally disrupt roads in the region; check your own government's current advice.

▸ What is the Pacific culture in Cali?

Much of Cali's population has roots on Colombia's Afro-descendant Pacific coast, and the city is the main showcase for its music, marimba and drums, and its food and viche, a sugar-cane spirit. The Petronio Alvarez festival of Pacific music, held each August, is the biggest celebration of it.

▸ How many days do I need in Cali?

Two to four days covers the sights, a few salsa classes and a day trip into the hills. Many travellers who come to dance stay a week or longer and base themselves in San Antonio or San Fernando.
