Gondar
The castle city of Ethiopia's emperors, where seventeenth-century palaces stand in the middle of an everyday highland town.
Gondar was the seat of Ethiopia's emperors for two centuries, and their castles still stand in a walled compound in the middle of town. Fasil Ghebbi, the Royal Enclosure, holds stone palaces, halls and towers unlike anything else in Africa, while the painted ceiling of Debre Berhan Selassie, crowded with winged angel faces, is one of the treasures of Ethiopian church art. The town sits in the cool highlands north of Lake Tana and is the usual base for trips into the Simien Mountains.

A little history of Gondar
For centuries Ethiopia's emperors ruled from moving camps. That changed under Fasilides, who came to the throne after his father's turn to Catholicism had split the country, restored the Orthodox Church, expelled the Jesuits and founded a fixed capital at Gondar around 1636. His successors added their own castles, churches and halls, and for well over a century the city was the centre of Ethiopian court life, church learning and painting.
From 1769 the emperors became figureheads in the Era of the Princes, as regional lords fought over the throne, and the court's power faded. Tewodros II ruled from elsewhere after 1855, a Sudanese Mahdist army sacked and burned the city in 1888, and the Italian occupation added the Piazza district before Gondar became the last Italian stronghold to fall in 1941. The Royal Enclosure was named a World Heritage Site in 1979.

FAQs about Gondar
▸ When is the best time to visit Gondar?
October to May, the dry season, when days are sunny and mild at this altitude and nights are cool. January is the most memorable time for Timkat at Fasilides' Bath. July and August are the wettest months, and June and September are rainy shoulders.
▸ Is Gondar safe to visit?
Government travel advice for the Amhara region, which includes Gondar, has for some time ranged from reconsidering travel to advising against it, and travel insurance may not cover you where that advice applies. Visitors who do go generally fly in rather than drive, travel with a local guide, and expect checkpoints, road closures or curfews to change plans at short notice. Check your own government's advice before booking and again before travelling.
▸ How many days do I need in Gondar?
Two days covers the Royal Enclosure, Debre Berhan Selassie, Fasilides' Bath and Kuskuam at an easy pace. Add at least one more night if you want to see the Simien Mountains, and longer to trek there.
▸ Can I visit the Simien Mountains from Gondar?
Yes, Gondar is where most Simien trips are arranged, but the park is a drive of a few hours away via Debark, where scouts and permits are sorted. A day trip is possible and long; an overnight in Debark or inside the park is far better, and it depends on the road north being open.
▸ What happens at Timkat in Gondar?
Timkat is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany. Priests carry the tabots, replicas of the Ark, from the city's churches to Fasilides' Bath in a procession of robes, umbrellas and chanting. After an overnight vigil the water is blessed and crowds jump in. It is the most famous Timkat in the country.
