Negril
Jamaica's best sunset coast: seven miles of soft sand on one side of town, cliff jumps into deep blue water on the other.
Negril is Jamaica's far-western beach town, split between the long, calm sweep of Seven Mile Beach and the limestone West End cliffs, where people jump into deep clear water and gather for sunset. It grew from a 1970s hippie hideaway into the island's most laid-back resort area, and it reopened to visitors within weeks of Hurricane Melissa in late October 2025, with some larger resorts still returning in phases through 2026.

Top things to do in Negril
-
Seven Mile Beach - walk, swim and graze the strip
scenic food 👍 PopularNegril's long white-sand strip runs along Norman Manley Boulevard with calm water, beach grills and the usual menu of parasailing, glass-bottom boats and jet skis. Negril officially reopened for business on 15 December 2025 after Hurricane Melissa, but some beachfront vendors and small businesses were still rebuilding into 2026, so check individual operators.
-
Rick's Cafe - cliff jumping and the West End sunset
adventure nightlife music 👍 PopularThe cliffside bar where professional divers leap from the trees and visitors take carved rock steps down to the water, then everyone stays for sunset cocktails. Rick's was rebuilt after Gilbert (1988) and Ivan (2004); we found no 2026 report confirming its post-Melissa status, so check its own channels before going.
-
West End cliffs - sunset from a cliff-top bar
scenic nightlife music ⭐ Highly recommendedAlmost every restaurant and bar clinging to the limestone cliffs south of town is a sunset grandstand, with sea ladders for a swim off the rocks and a quieter, more atmospheric feel than the beach. Pick any cliff-top spot away from the Rick's crowds.
-
Bloody Bay - the calm northern end
nature wildlife history ⭐ Highly recommendedThe cove at the north end of Seven Mile Beach has even calmer water, fewer crowds and the healthiest nearshore coral for snorkelling; it takes its name from the whalers who once butchered catches here.
-
Booby Cay - snorkel and lobster lunch
nature wildlife food 👍 PopularA short boat ride off the north end to a small offshore island for reef snorkelling and fresh lobster grilled on the beach, usually sold as a half-day boat trip from the strip.
-
Negril Marine Park reefs - dive the Throne Room and Arches
adventure nature wildlifeThe west-coast water is calm with dives at 30-90 ft on sites such as the Throne Room, Arches, Sharks Reef, Long Wall and a couple of plane wrecks; PADI centres like ScubaCaribe run boats from the beach. Pleasant recreational diving rather than a reason to fly in, and visibility drops in the rainy months.
-
Negril Lighthouse - West End panorama
history scenicThe 1894 lighthouse at the western tip of the island gives a bird's-eye view down the cliffs and coastline, an easy add-on to a West End sunset evening.
-
Royal Palm Reserve - Great Morass wetlands (check status)
nature wildlife off beaten pathBoardwalks once ran about 2 km into the Great Morass behind the beach, with birds including the endangered Jamaican black parakeet. Lonely Planet lists it as officially closed to the public, so treat it as closed unless locally confirmed.
-
Kool Runnings Adventure Park - water park and go-karts
adventureThe family option on Norman Manley Boulevard: water slides, an animal exhibit and show, go-karting and tours out into the Great Morass.

Eat and drink your way around Negril
food nightlife musicJerk chicken and lobster from beach grills, ackee and saltfish and patties, plus a sit-down meal at Erica's Hideaway; on Wednesday nights Roots Cafe has live bands playing classic reggae. A little history of Negril
Until the middle of the 20th century Negril was a remote fishing village at Jamaica's western tip, cut off from the rest of the island by the Great Morass wetland. The coast road built in 1959 ended that isolation, and through the late 1960s and 1970s the first backpackers and hippies, then resort builders, turned Seven Mile Beach and the West End cliffs into one of the Caribbean's best-known beach towns.
Growth brought pressure on the reef and wetland, and in 1998 the waters off Negril were declared a marine park. In October 2025 Hurricane Melissa hit western Jamaica hard; Negril's beachfront came through with comparatively limited damage and reopened for visitors in December 2025, though recovery in the surrounding parishes has been slower.
Negril Lighthouse built on the West End cliffs at the island's westernmost point.
Coast road completed, linking Negril to the rest of Jamaica across the Great Morass for the first time.
Tourism begins as backpackers and hippies discover Seven Mile Beach; the road to Montego Bay is improved in the early 1970s and resorts follow.
Negril Marine Park declared, protecting about 160 sq km of reef and coast from Davis Cove in Hanover to St. John's Point in Westmoreland.
Hurricane Melissa strikes western Jamaica in October; Negril officially reopens to tourism on 15 December.

FAQs about Negril
▸ When is the best time to visit Negril?
Negril works year-round. December to April is the prime stretch, with the driest, sunniest weather and the busiest beaches. May to November is still warm and perfectly visitable, with fewer crowds and lower rates, but it is hurricane season, so keep plans flexible and consider travel insurance.
▸ How many days do you need in Negril?
Plan on at least 3-5 days to split time between Seven Mile Beach and the West End cliffs, catch a few sunsets and fit in a snorkel trip on the marine park reef. Many visitors stay a week or more simply to slow down.
▸ Is Negril safe for tourists?
Negril is one of Jamaica's established resort areas and most visits pass without trouble; take normal precautions such as using licensed taxis, not walking empty stretches of beach or road late at night, and keeping valuables out of sight. Coastal resorts passed safety and readiness inspections before reopening after Hurricane Melissa, and current government travel advisories are worth checking before you go.
▸ Has Negril recovered from Hurricane Melissa?
Largely, for visitors. Negril reopened for tourism on 15 December 2025 after its beachfront came through with comparatively minimal damage, and most hotels resumed operations, although a few larger resorts stayed closed for longer. Recovery in the wider Westmoreland and Hanover area has been slower, so confirm your hotel and any tours are operating before booking.
▸ Do I need a visa to visit Negril?
Negril follows Jamaica's national entry rules. Many nationalities can visit visa-free for a short stay, but requirements depend on your passport, so check Jamaica's official entry requirements before you travel.
