Ulcinj

The Adriatic's longest sand beach, ending at a river island, below a former corsair stronghold.

Ulcinj is Montenegro's southernmost town, an old pirate harbour on the Albanian border where minarets rise beside church towers and Albanian is the language of the street. A walled Old Town sits on a headland above the crowded town beach, and to the south Velika Plaza runs for about 12 km of sand to the Bojana river and the island of Ada Bojana. Steady summer winds make it the Adriatic coast's kitesurfing hub.

When to avoid Ulcinj

No avoid months on the record. July and August are packed with holidaymakers from across the region, and the town beach and promenade get loud late. Outside summer, much of Velika Plaza and Ada Bojana shuts, so plan around closed kite schools and beach bars.

Top things to do in Ulcinj

  1. Ulcinj Old Town - walk the walls above the sea

    history scenic 👍 Popular

Climb from the town beach into the walled headland quarter: the Balsic Tower, Slave Square where corsairs once sold captives, and a small museum in a church that became a mosque. Come back at dusk for the view along the coast.

  2. Velika Plaza - a day on the long beach

    scenic 👍 Popular

The great sand beach south of town has shallow water that suits children and long stretches between the beach clubs. Rent a bike and ride the flat road behind it to find a quieter section.

  3. Ada Bojana - fish on the river and the beach at the mouth

    food scenic 👍 Popular

The triangular island where the Bojana meets the sea has a beach of its own and, along the river bank opposite, wooden fish restaurants on stilts serving the day's catch. Much of the island is a clothing-optional resort.

  4. Kitesurfing at Velika Plaza and Ada Bojana - ride the summer wind

    windsports ⭐ Highly recommended

Kite and windsurf schools line the southern end of the beach near the river mouth, where afternoon breezes and shallow, sandy water make it a good place to learn as well as to ride.

  5. Ulcinj Salina - birds on the old salt pans

    nature wildlife ⭐ Highly recommended

The vast former salt works behind Velika Plaza are now one of the Adriatic's best birding sites, with flamingos and wading birds on the shallow pools, especially on spring and autumn migration.

  6. Valdanos - olive groves down to a quiet cove

    scenic nature wildlife

North of town, a pebble bay sits at the foot of an old olive grove with thousands of trees. Clear water and few buildings make it the calm alternative to the town beaches.

  7. Ladies' Beach - sulphur springs on the rocks

    culture arts

A women-only rocky beach just south of town, fed by mineral springs long believed locally to help fertility, and still a curiosity worth seeking out.

A little history of Ulcinj

Ulcinj is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic: the Romans knew it as Olcinium, and the headland has been fortified ever since. Venice ruled it as Dulcigno until the Ottomans took it in 1571, and for the next two centuries it was a base for corsairs who raided Mediterranean shipping and sold captives in the Old Town. A local legend claims Cervantes was held here and named Dulcinea after the town.

The town stayed Ottoman until 1880, when the great powers handed it to Montenegro, and it has kept its Albanian majority. A severe earthquake in 1979 badly damaged the Old Town, which has been restored piece by piece since.
