Taupo
A town on the shore of a lake that is really a supervolcano, with Huka Falls on the doorstep.
Taupo is a lakeside town at the northern tip of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, which fills the caldera of one of the most violent volcanoes on earth. The Waikato River leaves the lake here and thunders through Huka Falls just north of town, and the snowy peaks of Tongariro National Park line the southern horizon. People come for the lake, the trout, the geothermal ground and a run of adrenaline sports, and use the town as the base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

When to avoid Taupo
No bad season. June-August are cold and frosty, with short days and snow on the Tongariro peaks, and that is ski season on Ruapehu. The Alpine Crossing becomes a winter mountaineering route then, best done with a guide, and it can be cancelled in bad weather in any month.

A little history of Taupo
Lake Taupo fills a caldera formed by the Oruanui eruption about 25,500 years ago, and around 1,800 years ago the Taupo volcano erupted again in one of the most violent eruptions of the last 5,000 years, blasting pumice and ash across the central North Island. The lake and its surrounds are the home of Ngati Tuwharetoa, who trace their descent to Ngatoroirangi, the navigator of the Arawa canoe, and who hold title to the lakebed today.
The town began as an armed constabulary post during the New Zealand Wars in 1869. In 1887 the paramount chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV gifted the sacred peaks of Tongariro to the nation, founding the country's first national park. The Wairakei geothermal station opened in the 1950s, and the trout, the lake and the road south turned Taupo into a holiday town.

The Hatepe eruption, one of the most violent of the last 5,000 years, devastates the central North Island
An armed constabulary redoubt is built at Taupo during the New Zealand Wars, the start of the town
Te Heuheu Tukino IV of Ngati Tuwharetoa gifts the Tongariro peaks to the nation, founding New Zealand's first national park
The Wairakei geothermal power station begins generating electricity north of town
The Aratiatia dam is completed, drying the rapids except during scheduled releases
Tongariro National Park is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, later recognised for its cultural values too

FAQs about Taupo
▸ When is the best time to visit Taupo?
September to May is the most comfortable stretch, with long, mild days for the lake and the best conditions for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing from roughly December to March. June to August are cold and frosty but bring ski season on Ruapehu and quieter towns.
▸ Can you do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing from Taupo?
Yes. Shuttles run from Taupo to the start and pick you up at the far end, about an hour each way. It is a long, exposed alpine day, so check the mountain forecast; in winter it becomes a snow and ice route best done with a guide.
▸ Is Taupo or Rotorua better as a base?
They are about an hour apart and suit different trips. Taupo is the lake, trout, Huka Falls, adventure sports and the gateway to Tongariro; Rotorua is the stronger choice for Maori culture and big geothermal parks. Many travellers stay in both.
▸ Can you swim in Lake Taupo?
Yes. The water is clean and clear, and in summer people swim from the town beaches, Acacia Bay and Kinloch. It stays cool even in summer, and there are warm spots where hot springs enter the lake.
▸ Is the Taupo volcano still active?
Yes, it is classed as an active volcano and is monitored, but it has not erupted in around 1,800 years and everyday life in town carries on normally. The geothermal fields around Taupo are the visible sign of the heat below.
