Kano

A thousand years of Saharan trade, still working in the indigo pits and market lanes of an old walled Hausa city.

The great trading city of the Hausa north, Kano has been a market town on the trans-Saharan routes for close to a thousand years. Inside the remains of its mud walls sit the Emir's palace, a market founded in the 15th century and the Kofar Mata dye pits, where indigo cloth is still dyed by hand. It is busy, hot and rarely visited by tourists, and rewards anyone who comes with a local guide and time to wander.

When to avoid Kano

April and May bring the fiercest heat of the year before the rains, and July and August the heaviest rain of the short wet season. The cool, dry months are the time to come, though the harmattan wind can wrap the city in a haze of Saharan dust.

Top things to do in Kano

  1. Kofar Mata dye pits - indigo dyeing by hand

culture arts history shopping 👍 Popular

Deep pits sunk into the ground near the Kofar Mata gate, said to date back to the 15th century, where dyers still soak cloth in indigo and beat it to a sheen. Dyed cloth is sold on the spot, and a guide will explain the process.

  2. Kurmi Market - the old city's trading maze

    shopping history 👍 Popular

Founded under Muhammad Rumfa in the 15th century, Kurmi is a warren of covered lanes selling leatherwork, cloth, brass, pottery, spices and everyday goods. Go with a guide; it is easy to lose your bearings, and haggling is expected.

  3. Kano Durbar - horsemen at the Sallah festivals

    culture arts history 👍 Popular

When it is held, the Durbar sees hundreds of horsemen in quilted armour, turbans and bright regalia ride in salute to the Emir at the palace around Eid el-Fitr and Eid el-Kabir. The dates follow the Islamic calendar, so they move through the year.

  4. Gidan Makama Museum - Kano's story in a 15th-century palace

history culture arts ⭐ Highly recommended

One of the oldest buildings in the city, a mud-walled palace beside the Emir's compound, now a museum of Kano's history, crafts and traditional architecture. The building itself, with its thick walls and decorated rooms, is the main exhibit.

  5. Dala Hill - the view over the old city

    history scenic ⭐ Highly recommended

The rocky hill where Kano began, now ringed by houses. A short climb gives the classic view across the flat mud roofs, minarets and courtyards of the old city, best early or late in the day.

  6. Emir's Palace (Gidan Rumfa) and the Central Mosque

    history culture arts

The vast walled palace begun by Muhammad Rumfa in the 15th century is still the seat of the emirate, with the Central Mosque beside it. Visitors usually see the outer walls and gateway; anything further is by arrangement, and non-Muslims should ask before approaching the mosque.

  7. Gidan Dan Hausa - the colonial residence

    history

An old mud-built house in the city, once home to Hanns Vischer, the early colonial education officer locals called Dan Hausa, and now a small museum. A quiet stop that shows how the British era settled into Hausa building styles.

A little history of Kano

Kano grew around Dala Hill, where iron-working settlements stood long before the walls. By the 15th century it was one of the leading Hausa city-states, rich on the trans-Saharan trade in cloth, leather and salt, and Muhammad Rumfa gave it a new palace, a great market and a firmer Islamic identity.

In 1807 the jihad of Usman dan Fodio brought Kano into the Sokoto Caliphate as one of its richest emirates. The British took the city in 1903 and ruled through the emir; the railway followed, and for decades the groundnut pyramids stacked beside the tracks were Kano's most photographed sight. It remains the commercial capital of northern Nigeria.

FAQs about Kano

▸ When is the best time to visit Kano?

November to February is the time to come: dry, with warm days and cool nights, though the harmattan can bring a dusty haze. April and May are the hottest months, and July and August the wettest. The Durbar follows the Eid festivals, whose dates move through the year.

▸ Is Kano safe to visit?

Several Western governments currently advise against all but essential travel to Kano State and much of northern Nigeria, and travel insurance may not cover you there. Visitors who do go usually fly in rather than drive, expect police checkpoints on intercity roads, and move around with a trusted driver and local guide. Check your own government's current advice before planning.

▸ What should visitors know about local customs?

Kano is a conservative Muslim city where Islamic law applies alongside federal law. Dress modestly, with arms and legs covered; alcohol is not sold openly in most of the city; and life slows around Friday prayers. Ask before photographing people, and before approaching the palace or mosques.

▸ Can visitors see the Kano Durbar?

When it is held, the Durbar takes place around Eid el-Fitr and Eid el-Kabir, with horsemen riding to the Emir's palace in a series of parades. It has not run every year, so confirm locally that it is going ahead, and go with a guide who can find you a spot.
