A little history of Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay's seascape of nearly 2,000 limestone karsts and islets in the Gulf of Tonkin has been inhabited for close to 18,000 years, with prehistoric fishing communities such as the Soi Nhu and Cai Beo cultures leaving traces in shoreline caves. In 1288, Vietnamese general Tran Hung Dao used the bay's tidal channels to trap and destroy an invading Mongol fleet on the nearby Bach Dang River, a victory still celebrated in Vietnamese history.
French colonial administrators arrived in the 1880s and were among the first Europeans to document the bay's scenery in detail, helping seed its reputation as a natural wonder. UNESCO inscribed Ha Long Bay as a World Heritage Site in 1994 for its aesthetic value, extended the listing in 2000 to recognize its geology, and in 2023 merged it with the neighboring Cat Ba Archipelago to form Vietnam's first inter-provincial World Heritage property.
