Nha Trang is Vietnam's beach city: a long crescent of sand and palm promenade backed by hotel towers, with a bay full of granite islands offshore and the brick towers of Po Nagar, raised by the Cham more than a thousand years ago, still smoking with incense above the river at the north end. It is a working port city as much as a resort, cheap and loud and fond of a late night, and the reef at Hon Mun makes it the country's diving base.

When to avoid Nha Trang
October and November are the ones to skip: the northeast monsoon parks itself on this coast, rain comes in days rather than showers, the sea turns brown and choppy and the island boats are the first thing cancelled. December is the tail of it. Midsummer is the hot, humid end of the dry stretch.

Yersin Museum - the doctor the city adopted

Getting there
Fly into Cam Ranh (CXR), about 35 km south, then roughly 45 min up the coast road into the city

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR)
Cam Ranh sits on the peninsula south of the city and takes domestic flights plus regional charters. The road in runs along the coast past the Bai Dai resort strip, about forty-five minutes to central Nha Trang. Airport coaches meet flights and drop along Tran Phu, metered taxis and app cars wait outside arrivals, and most hotels will arrange a car.

Nha Trang railway station
The station is inside the city, a short ride from the beach, and sits on the Reunification line: overnight sleepers up from Saigon, longer hauls from Da Nang, Hue and Hanoi. The nicest slow way to arrive.
Coach
Phia Nam bus station
Sleeper buses run in from Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne, Da Lat, Hoi An and Quy Nhon, many of them dropping passengers in the tourist quarter rather than at the terminal.
Drive
Highway 1 runs the length of the coast through town, and the mountain road up to Da Lat climbs away west through Khanh Le pass, one of the best drives in the country.

The road climbs from the coast into cool cloud forest, ending near the reconstructed hill station where Yersin grew quinine trees. Cold, damp and often in cloud while the beach bakes, with waterfalls and a good walk at the top. The bends demand a confident driver.

A little history of Nha Trang
For most of its recorded history this coast was Cham rather than Vietnamese. Nha Trang lay in Kauthara, one of the principalities of Champa, and the sanctuary the Cham raised above the Cai River from the eighth century is still standing and still in use. The Nguyen lords absorbed Kauthara in 1653 as Vietnamese settlement pushed south, and Nguyen Anh threw up a citadel inland at Dien Khanh in the 1790s during the wars with the Tay Son, while the place itself stayed a fishing village at the river mouth.
The French turned it into a scientific outpost before it was ever a resort. Alexandre Yersin settled here in the 1890s and ran the laboratory that became the Pasteur Institute; the Oceanographic Institute followed at Cau Da, and the north-south railway arrived in the 1930s. American forces used the airbase and the deep-water anchorage at Cam Ranh through the war, and the Soviet navy took the base afterwards. Tourism only claimed the beachfront from the 1990s, and the island resorts and cable car followed.

January to April is the pick: dry, warm and clear, with calm water. June to August is also good, just hotter and stickier. October and November are the wet peak and the months to avoid, with December still shaking off the rain. May and September sit in between.
▸ How many days do you need in Nha Trang?
Three is enough for a beach day, an island boat trip and a morning at Po Nagar and Long Son. Five lets you add the mud baths, the north shore, a waterfall or the mountain road, or simply slow down. Longer than that and most people are here to do nothing, which the city supports well.
▸ Is Nha Trang good for diving?
It is Vietnam's main dive base, centred on the marine protected area around Hon Mun, with easy shallow sites that suit beginners and courses. Set expectations: the coral has taken a beating from years of boat traffic and fishing, and visibility drops sharply in the rainy months at the end of the year.
▸ Should I stay in the city or out at Bai Dai?
Different holidays. The city gives you a beach with a whole noisy Vietnamese town attached, walkable food and cheap rooms. Bai Dai and the Cam Ranh strip give you a big resort on wide, quiet sand near the airport, and a half-hour drive whenever you want a street. Splitting the trip works.
▸ Is Nha Trang expensive?
It is one of the better-value beach cities in Southeast Asia: rooms, food and transport all cost noticeably less than the equivalent in Thailand, and street eating is cheaper again. The exceptions are the island resorts, the theme park and the beach clubs, which are priced for holidaymakers rather than for the neighbourhood.
