A little history of Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh was Vietnam's first national capital. In 968, local strongman Dinh Bo Linh united the country's warring factions and crowned himself king, choosing his home turf of Hoa Lu - a natural fortress of limestone karst and rivers - as the seat of the new state of Dai Co Viet. For 42 years Hoa Lu was the political heart of the country under the Dinh and Early Le dynasties, before the capital shifted north to Thang Long (modern Hanoi) in 1010.
After losing its capital status, Ninh Binh settled into life as a farming and quarrying region, with its karst valleys and cave temples continuing to draw pilgrims for centuries. The 20th century brought war damage and, later, national-park protection; in the 21st century the province reinvented itself around tourism, culminating in Trang An's 2014 UNESCO listing as Vietnam's first mixed cultural-and-natural World Heritage Site.
Dinh Bo Linh unifies the country's warlords and founds the Dinh dynasty, making Hoa Lu (present-day Ninh Binh) the capital of Dai Co Viet.
Hoa Lu serves as the imperial capital through the Dinh and Early Le dynasties, its karst hills forming a natural citadel wall.
King Ly Thai To relocates the capital to Thang Long (Hanoi), and Hoa Lu becomes a historic site rather than a seat of power.
