Shkoder
Albania's old northern capital, with a castle legend, a lake at the door and the Accursed Mountains on the horizon.
Shkoder is northern Albania's historic capital, a flat, bicycle-riding city on the shore of Lake Shkoder beneath the hilltop ruins of Rozafa Castle. Its restored pedestrian old centre, Catholic and Muslim heritage and a remarkable photography archive make it worth a stay in its own right. Most travellers also use it as the jumping-off point for the Albanian Alps, by road to Theth or by the Komani Lake ferry toward Valbona.

When to avoid Shkoder
Shkoder is one of the wettest cities in Europe, and late autumn and winter bring long spells of heavy rain. Access is its own question: Theth's guesthouses, the Valbona pass and the Komani ferry run mainly from late spring to early autumn, so plan mountain trips for the warm months. July and August are hot in the city itself.

A little history of Shkoder
Shkoder is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans. As Scodra it was the seat of the Illyrian kings until Rome took it in 168 BC, and the rock of Rozafa has been fortified ever since. Venice held it until a long Ottoman siege ended in 1479, and in the eighteenth century the Bushati pashas ruled much of the north from here almost independently of Istanbul.
It remained the cultural capital of northern Albania: a centre of Catholic scholarship and printing, home of the Marubi photographers and a city Montenegro besieged in the Balkan Wars before it was assigned to the new Albanian state. Under communism its churches and mosques were closed and its clergy persecuted, and the city played a prominent part in the protests that brought the regime down.

FAQs about Shkoder
▸ When is the best time to visit Shkoder?
May to August has the most reliable weather, and it lines up with the mountain season, when the Theth road, the Valbona pass and the Komani ferry are all in use. Late autumn and winter are very wet, and the high passes can be snowbound.
▸ Is Shkoder worth staying in, or just a base for Theth?
Give it at least a full day. Rozafa Castle, the Marubi museum, the Site of Witness and Memory and a bike ride along the lake make a rewarding stop, and most travellers pass through twice anyway, before and after the mountains.
▸ How do I get from Shkoder to Theth?
Furgons and shared 4x4s leave from the city in the morning and climb over the Thore pass. The road is far better than it once was, but it is mountainous and slow, and in winter snow can close it. Many guesthouses in Theth only open for the warm months.
▸ How does the Komani ferry loop work?
The usual route is an early transfer from Shkoder to the Koman dam, the ferry up the lake to Fierza, and a minibus on to Valbona. From there walkers cross the pass to Theth and return to Shkoder by road, or do the whole loop in reverse.
▸ Is Shkoder expensive?
No. It is one of the more affordable bases in Albania, with plenty of hostels and family guesthouses, and bikes are the cheapest way to see the city and the lakeshore.
