Kigali
A calm, spotless capital on green hills, and the easy start line for Rwanda's gorillas and savannah.
Kigali is Rwanda's capital, spread over green ridges and valleys at around 1,500 metres, which keeps it mild all year. It is one of Africa's cleanest and calmest capitals, with tidy streets, lively markets, galleries and cafes pouring the country's highland coffee. Most visitors begin at the Kigali Genocide Memorial on Gisozi hill, where the city remembers 1994, before heading on to the gorillas of Volcanoes National Park or Akagera's savannah, and the old Swahili quarter of Nyamirambo, the markets and the hilltop views reward a couple of days of their own.

When to avoid Kigali
No month is a write-off: at around 1,500 metres Kigali stays mild all year. March and April bring the long rains and October and November the shorter ones, with heavy downpours and muddier trails in the parks beyond the city. June to August is the driest stretch and the easiest for gorilla trekking and game drives.
Top things to do in Kigali
-
Kigali Genocide Memorial - the city's place of remembrance
history ⭐ Highly recommendedOn the Gisozi hillside, the memorial is where Kigali remembers the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Mass graves lie beneath its gardens, and the exhibition inside tells what happened and how the country has rebuilt since, ending in a room dedicated to the children who were killed. Most visitors come here first. Allow a few hours, go in the morning, and expect it to stay with you.
-
Nyamirambo - the Swahili quarter on a women-led walk
culture arts food ⭐ Highly recommendedOne of Kigali's oldest and liveliest neighbourhoods grew up around Swahili-speaking traders and is still the heart of the city's Muslim community, with its mosques, tailors and hair salons. Walking tours led by local women from the Nyamirambo Women's Center take in the workshops, the market and daily street life, and the centre's shop sells its members' crafts. After dark the main street is the busiest in town.
-
Kimironko Market - produce, kitenge and tailors
shopping culture arts 👍 PopularKigali's biggest market, in the east of the city, is piled high with tree tomatoes, passion fruit, beans and bananas, but the draw for visitors is the fabric section: choose a bright kitenge print and a tailor a few stalls away will sew a shirt or dress to measure, often within a day or two. Baskets and crafts fill the stalls around it.
-
Kandt House Museum - where the city began
historyThe house of Richard Kandt, the German resident who founded Kigali in 1907, stands on Nyarugenge hill above the city centre. It is now a small museum on the colonial era and the country's natural history, and the garden looks out over the valleys.
-
Inema Arts Center - Rwandan contemporary art
culture artsFounded by two artist brothers, this gallery and studio complex in Kacyiru shows painting, sculpture and mixed media by Rwandan artists, several of whom work on site, so you can often meet them. It is the best-known stop in a small but growing contemporary art scene, and an easy hour with its garden and shop.
-
Mount Kigali - the view from the city's high point
scenicThe highest hill in the city rises behind Nyamirambo to around 1,850 metres. Walk up the steep dirt tracks, or drive most of the way, for a sweep across Kigali's ridges and valleys; mornings are clearest, before the haze builds.
-
Rwandan coffee - cupping at Kigali's roasters
foodRwanda's high-altitude arabica, mostly bourbon varieties grown by smallholders and processed at hillside washing stations, is prized by speciality roasters, and Kigali is the place to taste it. Question Coffee runs cupping and roasting sessions that trace beans back to the farmers, many of them women, and cafes across Kimihurura and Kiyovu brew it with care.
-
Brochettes, isombe and akabenzi - eating in Kigali
food 👍 PopularLunch is often a buffet of beans, rice, cooked plantain, isombe (pounded cassava leaves) and ibirayi, Rwanda's much-loved potatoes. Evenings bring goat brochettes with grilled plantain, fried pork akabenzi and sambaza, tiny fried fish from Lake Kivu, best with a cold Primus and a drop of akabanga, a fierce chilli oil sold in tiny bottles.

The Virunga volcanoes on the Congo and Uganda borders shelter habituated families of mountain gorillas, tracked on foot through bamboo and forest for an hour in their company. Golden monkeys and the hike to Dian Fossey's grave are the other treks.

A little history of Kigali
For centuries the hills around Kigali lay at the heart of the Kingdom of Rwanda, ruled by a mwami, or king, whose court was based in the south at Nyanza by the end of the 19th century. Germany claimed Rwanda in the 1890s, and in 1907 its resident, the explorer and doctor Richard Kandt, set up his post on Nyarugenge hill, the seed of the city; his house still stands as a museum. Belgian troops took the country in 1916, and Belgium ruled it with neighbouring Burundi as Ruanda-Urundi.
Kigali stayed a small administrative town until independence in 1962, when its central position won it the role of capital. It has since spread far beyond Nyarugenge across the surrounding ridges, and it is now known for orderly, well-kept streets, a nationwide ban on plastic bags and Umuganda, the monthly morning of community work.

FAQs about Kigali
▸ When is the best time to visit Kigali?
Kigali is mild all year at around 1,500 metres, so there is no bad month. June to August is the long dry season and the most popular time, and December to February is a second, drier window. March and April bring the long rains and October and November the short rains, with heavy downpours that make the parks' trails muddier, though life in the city carries on as normal.
▸ Is Kigali safe?
Kigali is widely regarded as one of Africa's safest capitals: walking the central districts by day and into the evening is generally fine, though normal care with bags and phones still applies. Two standing rhythms to plan around: on the last Saturday morning of each month, Umuganda community work closes most businesses and stops most traffic until late morning, and the national commemoration week from 7 April is sombre, with public entertainment scaled back.
▸ How do you get from the airport to Kigali city centre?
Kigali International Airport is at Kanombe, about 10 km east of the centre. Taxis wait outside arrivals and take about 20-30 minutes to Kiyovu or Kimihurura, longer at rush hour, and many hotels arrange a pickup if you ask ahead. Moto taxis are quicker but awkward with luggage.
▸ Can you see the gorillas on a day trip from Kigali?
Yes, but it is a long day: treks start early in the morning at the park headquarters near Musanze, around 2-2.5 hours' drive away, so a day trip means leaving before dawn. Most people sleep a night or two near the park instead. Gorilla permits are expensive and limited in number, so secure one before you fix your dates.
▸ What currency is used in Kigali?
The Rwandan franc. Cards work in most hotels, upmarket restaurants and supermarkets, and ATMs are easy to find in the centre, but carry cash for markets, motos and small cafes. Mobile money, mainly MTN MoMo, is how many locals pay for almost everything. National park and gorilla permit fees are usually quoted in US dollars.
▸ What language is spoken in Kigali?
Kinyarwanda is spoken by almost everyone, and English, French and Swahili are also official languages. English is widely used in hotels, tourism and business, and French is still common among older Rwandans. A few words go a long way: muraho is hello and murakoze is thank you.
▸ Are plastic bags really banned in Rwanda?
Yes. Non-biodegradable plastic bags have been banned nationwide since 2008, and bags found in luggage can be taken off you at the airport, so pack in something else. Shops use paper or cloth instead, and the ban is part of why Kigali's streets are so clean.
▸ How many days do you need in Kigali?
Two or three days covers the city: the Genocide Memorial, Nyamirambo, Kimironko Market, the museums and galleries, and an evening or two eating out. Most visitors fit that around a gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park or a safari in Akagera, and many continue west to Lake Kivu for a few days by the water.
