Lake Kivu (Gisenyi)
Rwanda's inland sea: a deep rift lake of beaches, islands and singing fishermen, where gorilla trips come to slow down.
Lake Kivu fills a deep rift valley on Rwanda's western border, its steep, terraced shore looking across the water to the mountains of Congo. Gisenyi, at the northern end, is the main base: a lakeside resort town of sandy beach, palms and faded colonial villas, and the classic place to unwind after the gorilla treks in Volcanoes National Park. South along the shore lie the pine-covered peninsulas and islands of Kibuye and the border town of Cyangugu, all three linked by the Congo Nile Trail.

A little history of Lake Kivu (Gisenyi)
Lake Kivu fills a deep trough in the Albertine Rift between Rwanda and Congo. Lava from the Virunga volcanoes to the north once blocked its old outlet, so the lake now drains south through the Rusizi River into Lake Tanganyika, and its deep water holds large volumes of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide. The Rwandan shore was the western edge of the old Kingdom of Rwanda, a country of steep farmed hills and fishing villages. The German officer Gustav Adolf von Gotzen reached the lake in 1894, the first European known to have seen it, and a 1910 conference in Brussels drew the colonial border down its middle.
After Belgian troops took Rwanda in 1916, both shores came under Belgian rule, and Gisenyi grew into a lakeside resort for colonial families, whose villas still line the waterfront. Isambaza, the small fish that now keep the fishing fleet busy, were brought in from Lake Tanganyika in the 1950s. Since independence the three lake towns have kept their roles as resort, fishing port and border town, and the lake's methane is now tapped to generate electricity.

FAQs about Lake Kivu (Gisenyi)
▸ When is the best time to visit Lake Kivu?
June to August is the driest stretch, with May, January and February also good, and these are the easiest months for the Congo Nile Trail and boat trips. March-April and October-November bring the heaviest rain, usually as afternoon storms. Temperatures hardly change: the lake sits at around 1,500 m, so days are warm and nights cool all year.
▸ Can you swim in Lake Kivu?
Yes. People swim off Gisenyi's beach and from the jetties and lodges around Kibuye, and the water is mild all year. Unlike many African lakes, Kivu has no hippos or crocodiles, and it is widely described as free of bilharzia, though it is worth checking current health advice before you go.
▸ Is the gas in Lake Kivu dangerous?
The lake's deep water holds large amounts of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide, and scientists have monitored it closely since a gas-charged lake in Cameroon, Lake Nyos, released a deadly cloud in 1986. At Kivu the gas stays locked in the deep layers, and the methane is now piped up to make electricity. Swimming, boating and staying on the shore are everyday activities.
▸ Is it safe to visit Lake Kivu, and can you cross into Congo?
The lake towns are relaxed and easy to travel with the usual precautions. Gisenyi and Cyangugu, though, sit directly on the border with eastern Congo, which has been unsettled for decades. Crossings at Goma and Bukavu can close at short notice, so check your own government's current advice before you go, and never plan a trip across, including the Nyiragongo volcano climb from Goma, without it.
▸ Gisenyi or Rubavu: which name is right?
Both. The districts around the lake's three towns are officially Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi, and those names appear on maps and bus boards alongside, or instead of, Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu. Kamembe is the main town beside Cyangugu. Locals use both sets of names, so either will get you there.
