Volcanoes National Park (Musanze)
The most accessible place on earth to sit an hour beside wild mountain gorillas, two hours' drive from an international capital.
Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan slopes of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of five forested volcanoes topped by Karisimbi at 4,507 m, on the borders with Uganda and the DR Congo. It is home to habituated families of endangered mountain gorillas, and an hour spent beside them is the reason most people come to Rwanda at all. Dian Fossey based her research here from 1967, and the town of Musanze below is the gateway.

A little history of Volcanoes National Park (Musanze)
Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of dormant and extinct volcanoes on the borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Created in 1925 to shelter mountain gorillas, it is among the oldest national parks in Africa, and was enlarged in 1929 into the Belgian-run Albert National Park. After Congolese (1960) and Rwandan (1962) independence the park was split, leaving the Rwandan portion as Volcanoes National Park.
The park became world-famous through Dian Fossey, who founded the Karisoke Research Center between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke in 1967 and studied the gorillas until her murder in 1985; her grave lies inside the park. Fighting during the early-1990s civil war closed research and tourism for years, but the park reopened and gorilla trekking from Kinigi, near Musanze, is now one of Rwanda's main sources of conservation and tourism revenue.

FAQs about Volcanoes National Park (Musanze)
▸ When is the best time to visit Volcanoes National Park?
Gorilla trekking runs all year, so any month works. The drier spells of Jan-Feb and May-Aug are the best, with firmer trails and easier hiking; Mar-Apr and Sep-Dec are wetter and muddier but still fine, often with fewer visitors. Kwita Izina, the gorilla-naming ceremony at Kinigi, is usually held around early September.
▸ How many days do I need in Volcanoes National Park?
Plan 2-3 days. One day for a gorilla trek, plus a day for golden monkey tracking, the hike to Dian Fossey's grave or a climb such as Mount Bisoke, with arrival from Kigali (around 2-3 hours by road) on either side.
▸ Is Volcanoes National Park safe for tourists?
Yes. Treks are led by armed park rangers, the trekking zones are closely monitored including along the DR Congo border, and the Rwanda Development Board reports years of visits without incident. The main real risks are steep, muddy, nettle-covered terrain and altitude, so wear boots, gloves and rain gear, follow your guide, and check your government's current travel advice for the border region.
▸ Do I need a gorilla permit in advance?
Yes. Permits are limited to small groups per habituated family each day and are sold by the Rwanda Development Board, directly or through tour operators. They often sell out months ahead in the Jun-Sep peak, so book early and check current pricing on the official RDB site.
▸ Do I need a visa to visit Rwanda?
Rules depend on your passport. Rwanda offers visas on arrival or an e-visa through the official Irembo portal to all nationalities, and many African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie citizens enter visa-free for a short stay. Check Rwanda's official immigration entry rules for your nationality before you fly.
